Liebster Award – 11 Facts About Me and 11 Questions for 11 Bloggers

The Liebster Award – round two.

I have been nominated for the Liebster Award by Kamalia et Alia and this is the second post. The first one contained me answering Kamalia’s 11 questions. Here I will list 11 random facts about myself and ping 11 new people and pose 11 questions for them.

If this post has linked to you, it’s because you have been nominated for the Liebster Award by me! (Your link is listed at the bottom of the post).

Liebster-award-rules I

I don’t know how many followers the 11 people have though.

I noticed that people had started tagging bloggers that had already been nominated and a lot were struggling to find new people to link to. This is why I went to the WordPress Reader, looked through the “computer games”, “video games” and “World of Warcraft” tags and scouted for some new blood. A few of them have only been writing for a few months, and there are a few WoW blogs in there too, whom I think have not been nominated. They all have two things in common: they touch upon the topic of games and have posted recently.

But first, the 11 random facts about me!

11 Random Facts About Me

1: I have a phobia – I’m scared to drive. I’m fine in the passenger seats, although if the driver likes taking chances and speeding, I’ll be very tense sitting there. But driving myself? Nope! I have a drivers license and passed my exams with fine marks, but since I believe I’ll inadvertently run over school children, mothers with prams, elders, puppies and kittens, I keep off the roads.

2: I am an only child and the youngest in my family. All my cousins were adults when I was a child, and their kids are teenagers now. PigletThis has always left me a bit stranded at my own generational island, everyone is either a lot older or a lot younger than me. And my dad still has a habit of forgetting that I’m not a child anymore.

3: I’m plagued by the state of the world. I know that sounds really dramatic, but I think I might be a closet activist. Especially poverty, exploitation and the lack of environmental action bothers me. Unfortunately my personality is also very similar to Piglet, so instead of doing anything about it, I wring my hands and worry.

4: I had a great childhood. I’d rather be a kid again than be adult – yuck, adulthood!

5: I’m really into the Seattle grunge movement, the music, the style, generally the 90’s. I was too young to really experience grunge fully (and not anywhere near Seattle), but I think my connection to it links to positive associations with being a kid in the 90’s (see fact nr. 4).

6: I’m very excitable! I love parties! But I’m moody in equal measure. I can wake up in the morning and without reason feel low and lame. It can change throughout the day, several times. I don’t have bipolar disorder, but I feel like I can understand a little what it’s like, for people who do have it.

7: I’m very social around people I’m familiar with, but very shy when meeting new people. I have become a lot better at bringing down the nervousness over the years.

8: I’ve been told I’m very expressive. I flap my arms, gurn my face. People have thought I was a professional actor. If that had been the case, I would have worked in comedy.

9: I have a very shrill laughter. Not in any way charming or pleasant. It’s horrible, people cover their ears.

Maybe I should get one of these too!

10: I cannot play any instrument nor can I sing. I’m planning on learning how to play a kid-sized guitar, both because I have small hands and because it would be so ridiculous in a funny way.

11: I’ve started collecting pieces to complete certain costumes. I can now become a very posh mime (it’s not a hard one, but I love the idea of being a mime). I have a few bits for a clown costume. I’d also like to be a jester, not to mention characters like Snow White and Alice in Wonderland. A level 1 cosplayer.

Liebster Award – Kamalia’s 11 Questions and my 11 Answers

The badge of pride

I have been nominated for the Liebster Award by Kamalia et Alia. I read her questions and thought they were brilliant, so this post is me answering them. It got a bit wordy, so I’ll have to fulfill the rest of the rules in another post (11 personal facts + 11 questions for 11 new people).

Below are the Liebster Award rules:

Kamalia’s 11 Questions and my 11 Answers

  • tangled1) Tell me about a game or games — video or table or both! — that you are really enjoying right now.

I have really been enjoying this little mobile game, which is quite simple and has worked wonders in terms of reducing stress for me.

It’s called Tangled (found on Google Play) and the screenshot to the right was how it used to look before it was patched. Now it crashes on my phone whenever I try to play it.

The goal is to make the red line as long as possible, by turning hexagonal tiles to create a path. I loved playing this game when it actually worked on my phone!

  • 2) What classes, races, or roles do you find yourself most drawn to in RPGs, whether in D&D, a single-player video game, or an MMO? + 3) When you make your first character in a new game, do you try to make a character that is in some way an avatar of your RL self, or do you make someone entirely different?

I prefer hybrid classes and I think this has to do with the fact that I like to keep a few doors open at a time. Originally I was drawn to elves, anything beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. Now that I’ve tried creating characters that are not a projection of an ideal self, but instead have their own story and motivations, it added another and very interesting dimension to me. In the future, I see myself going further down that road.

draenei female character revamp april fools 2014

Hey, look at this gal! Not your standard beauty, but still good material for an interesting character. No, I’m serious!

In fact, I take great pleasure in toying with character creation modes. I don’t even care what game it is or if I’m going to play it any further – I love character creation modes! Usually I will first make a character that inspires me and looks cool. Then I will make the most hideous thing you can imagine, really getting all the sliders off to the extremes, scars, pinprick eyes, bad hair and probably also bad breath! I crashed The Sims 3 recently when making the most perfect evil-looking witch-sim you can imagine!

  • 4) Describe a typical session of playing your current favorite video/computer game.

I’m in my bed, about to sleep, with my beloved smart phone and playing a mobile game, often a puzzle. Also, I’m playing one match a day of this mobile game called Robotek (found on Google Play). It’s a small strategic game, you vs. the AI. You win when you burn down the health points of the opponent using various attacks and small bots. It had a bit of a learning curve, yet I’d still recommend it.

  • 5) What was the very first computer/video game you ever played? How old were you?
Early hand held game

My first “beep beep game” was about moving a basketball player back and forth on the screen to keep a continuous number of balls from falling to the ground.

I must have been 6-7 years old when I played these really early hand-held games. We called them “beep beep games” based on sounds they made. They were extremely simple compared to today’s standards, inexpensive and had only one game mode. Attempting to beat your own high score, was all you could do.

Later my parents purchased a used computer from my mom’s coworker, who came and set it up for us. It booted in DOS and had an early version of Windows on it. This was when I started to play computer games on a PC.MS-DOS

The thing was, the computer did have games installed and a few games on 3,5″ floppy disks, but most of them were demos! As a kid, I didn’t know what a demo was (I was playing beep beep games!), and thus believed that Wolfenstein 3D, was actually called “Wolfenstein Demo”. I believed that the reason I couldn’t make the elevator go to the next floor, was the game being bugged.

wolfenstein 2d Back then, I was too creeped out to play it on my own. When I look at the screenshots today, it’s so much more pixelated than I remember.

So I only played this with a friend. One of us would control the arrow keys for movement, and the other space bar for shooting. Of course this resulted in panicked screams whenever an enemy appeared. Even worse, somewhere along the line, I must have messed up the key binds, because we couldn’t get the main character to turn right anymore. So to shoot and hit the soldiers, we would have to spin left, often several times, until the gun pointed in the right direction again. That keyboard sure took a beating. In short – it was a mess!

  • 6) Do you have more than one blog? If so, what is/are your other blog(s) about?

Yes, I have a Tumblr, but it functions as my inspiration log. It will probably be uninteresting to most people. There’s also WoW Roleplay Gear, although I don’t consider it a blog per se.

  • 7) Name three non-WoW/game-related websites that you visit frequently.

I read several Danish news sites. I also read Sociological Images, I like how the comments often continue the debate and offer more facets to the article. People are mostly civil, which I appreciate. I don’t comment there myself though. If I want to pass time, I browse Thought Catalog. There’s a lot of trashy articles there, with the occasional gem. I avoid places like 9gag, who are notorious with omitting references and links to the creators, whose creative content they use.

  • 8) What was/is your favorite animal to see at the zoo?

Anything feline. I’ve also had a laugh triggering monkeys to mimic my facial expressions. Do a wide open mouth (no teeth) and wide open eyes really quickly a few times, and they will do it too. Warning: other people (and monkeys), might find you a tad weird.

  • 9) Cake or Pie? What is your favorite flavor of your preferred dessert?

All of it! I don’t like it too nutty, but fruity or chocolate, I’m a sugar junkie!

  • 10) What toppings do you like on a pizza? on an ice-cream sundae?

The pizza here is notoriously bad! They put layers upon layers of meat on them. And I don’t mean, “ah lots of nice beef on my pizza” – no I mean, all kinds of meat: Shrimp, chicken, bacon and kebab on the same pizza (and a bit of horse, I’m sure). I prefer mozzarella, pesto, spinach, salad, smoked ham, that kind of stuff.

  • 11) What is your favorite writing instrument?

I have kept a diary since ’95, and I use pens in all colors, even glitter pens – yay! Anything finely pointed will do.

The remaining 11 personal facts about me and 11 questions for 11 new bloggers are in the making and will be published in another post!

New Life, Long Nights, Reality Bites

How do you crack open an old blog without writing a post that says “I’ve really wanted to write more, but sorry I didn’t…”?

I never ran out of ideas, I ran out of motivation. 2013 was not en easy year for me, I felt a loss of identity after I graduated, now I was no longer a student. Now it was about finding a job, which proved difficult. My computer had a breakdown, then I had a breakdown. Reality bites!

reality-bites winona

That was in March.

I did manage to find employment, but not a permanent contract. I have managed to get interviews, even for really nice jobs, but no one bit the bait yet.

So I have a lot of time, I was not designed to have this much unscheduled, unmanageable time, where do I complain? There’s no customer support for Life? I hate this game!

Where do you go if you want a new life? Why The Sims of course!!! (or Second Life).

sims 3 me as sim

This looks a little like me, especially the eyebrows. The clothing is definitely mine!

But when I had to give myself character traits, I wasn’t sure I was going to be an easy character to play, I guess I knew that already.

sims 3 my traits

I had to choose just five traits: ‘artistic’, ‘eco-friendly’, ‘excitable’, ‘heavy sleeper’ and ‘neurotic’. But if I could choose more I would add: ‘hopeless romantic’, ‘frugal’, ‘childish’ and ‘family oriented’. Maybe ‘couch potato’ too, haha!

Look what I chose as a Life Time Wish! – ‘Master of the Arts’! Sheesh! How is that gonna get me a job? Well, I don’t know, but look – watercolors!

So status is, I want to blog again, but also about other stuff than WoW, other games (including The Sims 3), mobile games etc. Maybe a little blog-make-over too. I have the ideas, I know exactly what I want to do, just have to get the potato off the couch.

Ps: I have also been active elsewhere:

My Tumblr. This is mainly my inspiration blog, not much personal content (it needs sorting and tagging though).

Now I am Technologically Homeless

My laptop, and only computer, has died.

It couldn’t detect a hard drive. Breaking into my laptop to re-insert it did not help. Based on the noise it’s making, we suspect one of the mechanical components of the hard drive is stuck, and now I am technologically homeless.

*small violin*

As a temporary solution, we went and purchased a new screen and set it up with Noelani’s old computer on the dining table.  Since my computer was a laptop, I had a bit of a strange setup. It was positioned on a small café table on wheels in front of our IKEA sofa, where I was able to comfortably sit while playing … talk about a lazy gamer…

But now I’m sitting at a real table, with this horrible clicky keyboard and nothing feels right. Playing WoW doesn’t feel right, internet browsing doesn’t feel right, and the biggest crime of them all – this computer is less powerful than my old one – eew!!

We also lost everything I had done on WoW Roleplay Gear since Christmas, which had not been published yet. I had done a lot of quest reward sets, which I now have to start over with. All my personal stuff is gone, I have a 6 month old backup of my school folder and blog folder, but that’s it. I’ll have to look into maybe having the disks taken out and put into a new drive, but it’s looking really pricey.

Okay, calling it being technologically homeless is an exaggeration. After all, I am using Noelani’s old computer. Maybe it’s more like sleeping on your friend’s sofa, and you miss all your own stuff, even though your host is being perfectly hospitable.

In closing, I’ve put in an old picture I saved from once WoW Model Viewer was being really buggy. I thought the effect was interesting and saved a bunch of pictures of misshapen blood elf females. Every other race did not display this error, but thankfully blood elves are such talented models ;)

Did I Paint Myself Into a Corner?

In 2011 I wrote about the educational path I had chosen and whether that choice actually meant I had painted myself into a corner.

Performance artist Keith Haring painting himself into a corner - almost like me!

Performance artist Keith Haring painting himself into a corner – almost like me!

Now I’m fully graduated, I hold an IT degree which usually makes people vastly overestimate how skilled I actually am at programming and fixing all kinds of computer problems, because well… I did study computer games, but not exactly how to make them. Because it comes across as an extremely narrow thing which doesn’t scream usefulness the same way studying fx. medicine does, people translate my education into “some IT”.

The Keith Haring performance piece was basically the feeling I had as I was progressing through my education. I had previously experienced unemployment with “only” a bachelor degree in communications and psychology, and finding a job at that time was very difficult. I perceived myself as a jack of all trades, master of none. I was never the perfect candidate for any job, and it bothered me.

The consequence of this experience became that I wanted to be more specialized, I wanted to read a job advert and think “I’m perfect for this! How could they NOT want to hire me?”. So I chose games studies.

The fear of not being able to find the right shelf was still bothering me, and the closer I was to graduation the more I started looking at my time at the university as a few really brilliant years, which probably wouldn’t amount to anything special later on. Because of the recent economic crisis, newspapers were (and still are) flooding with stories of lay offs and at times it robbed me of my motivation to work on my thesis. It felt like it was meaningless anyways, I would have no chance at building a career in a society that was in economic turmoil, so what was the point?

Keith Haring painting into corner2

Look! He made it!

Thankfully, I feel a lot more qualified than last time I was in this situation and I’m not as low as I expected I would be. Now I nag at myself for not enjoying the thesis-writing process more, instead of worrying about the future. If only I knew then, what I know now.

With that in mind, I’ve had to remind myself of what Søren Kierkegaard once said:

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards”

(For the Danish speakers, the original quote is a lot more elegant: “Livet forstås baglæns, men må leves forlæns“)

Not long ago I attended a job search meeting, with a lot of other recent graduates and a few who had been in the work market for years, but had just lost their jobs. At some point we were instructed to introduce ourselves to the others around the table. Besides me, there was an art historian, a sociologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, a biologist and one who did something with health care.

The subsequent conversation revolved almost entirely around me and what my education was about. They were all so positive and I got so many references and tips. It was such a strange experience, I had longed to be like them, studying something tangible like psychology or sociology, with a simple title that people understand and yet here I was being treated like the special butterfly.

Nobody inquired the sociologist nor the anthropologist. I guess people assume they know what that is about. My strategy of going for something more narrow in terms of education, but perhaps also unusual, worked in the sense that people got curious. I’m hoping this will help me in my future endeavours.

Afterwards the two older women at the table (the biologist and psychologist) pep talked me for half an hour and showed so much interest in my current situation (I’m telling you, I have a strange appeal to women in their 50’s, they always like me a lot).

So I ended up leaving that meeting feeling like the most successful unemployed person in the world – A walking oxymoron!
